Cypriot Deputy Minister Discusses Migration with International Officials

The Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection, Dr. Nikolas Ioannidis, held a series of bilateral meetings with international officials on the sidelines of the Informal Justice and Home Affairs Council (JHA) in Nicosia. The meetings took place in a positive atmosphere, with counterparts expressing their gratitude for the invitation and their participation in the JHA. Discussions focused on issues such as stabilizing the situation in Syria, the need for the country's reconstruction, and strengthening cooperation for the return of Syrian nationals to their homeland under safe conditions. The successful implementation of the Voluntary Return (AVR) program by the Republic of Cyprus was highlighted. Furthermore, ways to address the instrumentalization of migration by third countries and to strengthen the fight against migrant smuggling were discussed. Emphasis was placed on expanding cooperation with countries in North Africa and the Middle East. Cyprus is also seeking Bulgaria's political support for its accession to the Schengen Area. Finally, the Deputy Minister informed the officials about the measures being taken to address illegal migration, both by sea and through the Ceasefire Line, explaining how the Green Line Regulation prevents the creation of a hard border and allows for effective control of movements.
