Low Dam Levels Persist Despite Recent Rainfall in Cyprus

Despite increased rainfall in recent days, dam levels in Cyprus remain low, at just 11.8%. The inflow of water over the past three days amounted to approximately 2.4 million cubic meters, with the majority directed to dams in the Paphos district. However, officials emphasize that more and stronger rainfall is needed to substantially improve the situation and bring Cyprus out of the drought period. The need for water conservation remains imperative, as the hydrological situation is critical. Additionally, the importance of rainfall for the sea is highlighted, as it enriches the marine ecosystem and coastlines. According to the Water Development Department, the total amount of water stored in dams is 34 million cubic meters, compared to 26.1% on the same day last year. The total capacity of the dams is 335 million cubic meters. It is noted that Cyprus has a large number of dams in relation to its size, having utilized almost all of the island's rivers. Rational water management, which includes storage and environmental protection, is considered essential to address water pressure.
