Supervision of Students Outside School Hours Now Under Ministry of Education

The House of Representatives has approved an amendment to the Elementary Education Law, transferring the responsibility for supervising students outside school hours to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth (MOECSY). This change was deemed necessary to fill the gap regarding the safety of students remaining at school before and after class hours. The amendment, which will be implemented from the 2026-2027 school year, transfers responsibility from school boards to the MOECSY. The proposer of the bill, Alekos Tryfonidis, emphasized that there was a serious safety issue for children remaining at school unsupervised, pointing out that even an accident would be "a disgrace to all". The goal is to supervise students for about half an hour before and after classes.
