TAEP Procedures and Telemedicine Under Scrutiny

The House of Representatives' Control Committee discussed the Auditor General's report on the Accident and Emergency Departments (TAEP) of the General Hospitals of Nicosia. The report highlights non-compliance with the internal procedures of the OKYPY and administrative weaknesses. Specifically, problems are reported in the completion of patient admission forms, with signatures only from trainee doctors, which exposes the organization to legal risks. The discussion focused on the telemedicine diagnosis of X-rays and the operation of CT scanners. It was found that on-call radiologists refused to diagnose X-rays, resulting in the use of telemedicine, which is carried out without a comprehensive legal framework. In addition, there is a delay in the preparation of medical reports, leading to the consideration of abolishing overtime pay for radiologists. The malfunction of the CT scanner at Nicosia Hospital and the delivery of a new scanner, which is expected to be operational soon, were also mentioned. It was pointed out that the time patients spend in the TAEP is partly due to the lack of adequate medical staff during night hours. OKYPY General Executive Director Kypros Stavridis acknowledged the need to update the TAEP basic operating manual and stressed that doctors are under pressure. The discussion highlighted the need to improve procedures and strengthen staffing at TAEP.
