Battle Tanks Back on the Agenda for the National Guard – Options Under Consideration by the Ministry of Defence

The procurement of battle tanks for the National Guard is once again a central issue, with the Ministry of Defence (MOD) examining various options. The main choices are the French Leclerc and the German Leopard 2, both advanced vehicles. However, the Leclerc appears to be gaining ground due to the close Cyprus-France cooperation on defence matters and France's participation in the SAFE program. The cost of the Leclerc, around €16-18 million per unit, is considered high but likely to be covered through the SAFE program. The possibility of purchasing Israeli Merkava tanks has been put on hold following the events of October 7th, as Israel prioritizes maintaining its own military forces. The MOD is carefully considering the needs of the National Guard and the geopolitical data to make the best possible decision.
