Christodoulides and Androulakis Discuss Middle East and Cyprus Issue

The Middle East and the Cyprus issue dominated the meeting between the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and the President of PASOK, Nikos Androulakis. President Christodoulides expressed hope that international initiatives would lead to de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East, emphasizing that the situation negatively affects Europe and the region. President Christodoulides referred to the solidarity shown by the European Union, which lays the foundations for the activation of Article 42.7 if necessary. He stressed that Cyprus is part of the solution to the region's problems and that its security is also the security of the EU. Regarding the Cyprus issue, President Christodoulides referred to his recent meeting with the UN Secretary-General, describing it as very good and encouraging. He emphasized the political will to restart substantial negotiations, utilizing the negotiating acquis. President Androulakis thanked President Christodoulides for his prompt response to his request for a meeting, at a critical geopolitical moment. The meeting confirmed the close ties between Cyprus and Greece and the joint effort to resolve the challenges in the region.
