Banks Association Opposes Changes to Payment Account Regulations

The Cyprus Banks Association (CBA) expresses its disagreement with the proposed amendments to legislation regarding the comparability of fees, the change of payment accounts, and access to payment accounts by very small businesses. The CBA disagrees with the broadening of the definition of “consumer” to include very small businesses and the possibility of maintaining a payment account with more than one credit institution. It believes that extending the 2014/92/EU Directive to very small businesses is incorrect, as the directive applies only to natural persons. Additionally, it expresses fears that the amendments will put Cypriot credit institutions at a competitive disadvantage compared to other European institutions. The CBA emphasizes that each bank should have the autonomy to determine its policy regarding the products and services it offers.
