44 FMD Outbreaks – Over 21,000 Goats and Sheep Culled

The number of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks in Cyprus has reached 44, resulting in the culling of over 21,000 goats and sheep. The latest results of the Veterinary Services' analyses revealed two new infected units: a unit of 16 goats and sheep in Dromolaxia and a unit of cattle with 193 animals in Meneou, within the infected zone in the province of Larnaca. The Veterinary Services continue epidemiological investigations, sampling, tracing and laboratory tests. At the same time, vaccinations are progressing, with a coverage rate of 89% in cattle units and 65% in goat and sheep units island-wide. The second repeat vaccination has already begun. The culling of animals in Livadia continues, reaching approximately 21,000 goats and sheep in total. The Veterinary Services and the Police are cooperating to detect illegal movements, having already identified four cases for which the prescribed measures are being taken.
