164 Expulsions of Foreign Nationals from Central Prisons - 643 Departures in Total in 45 Days

Since December 10th, 2023, a total of 164 foreign nationals have been expelled from detention centers and the Central Prisons in Cyprus. Additionally, there have been 450 voluntary departures and 29 self-voluntary departures, bringing the total number of departures to 643. Government sources report that operations to locate illegal immigrants and manage the issue of prison decongestion are ongoing at an intensive pace. The government has prioritized reducing prison overcrowding while effectively controlling illegal immigration, and the results are significant. This approach includes strengthening voluntary returns, with the potential release of approximately 100 prisoners convicted of non-serious offenses who are foreign nationals. These actions are being taken with respect for legal and humanitarian frameworks. The President of the Republic has announced the intention to implement measures within January to further support voluntary returns. Government sources emphasize that consultations between the Attorney General's Office, the Ministry of Justice, and the Deputy Ministry of Foreigners and Migration are underway to implement mechanisms that will facilitate voluntary returns and contribute to prison decongestion.
