EU to Award First Energy Transition Champions for Fisheries and Aquaculture in Limassol

Limassol will host the award ceremony for the first “Energy Transition Champions for Fisheries and Aquaculture of the EU” on May 22nd, as part of the European Maritime Day. The competition for best practices aims to highlight and reward outstanding examples, innovative solutions, and initiatives that support the energy transition in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors, establishing the selected “champions” as models of innovation, efficiency, and sustainability across Europe. The awards cover three categories: innovations for the energy transition in fishing activities, progress in energy efficiency in aquaculture, and innovation in infrastructure. Applications, which must be submitted in English by April 2nd via an online form, will be evaluated based on the technology readiness level (at least TRL-7) and the suitability of the solution for one or more of the specified categories. This initiative is part of the broader efforts of the European Union to promote the energy transition and reduce the energy footprint in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. The selection of projects will be based on specific criteria, ensuring that they are implemented by legally established entities in one or more EU member states. The award ceremony in Limassol will honor the selected “champions” and showcase their best practices, contributing to the wider effort for a more sustainable and energy-efficient fisheries and aquaculture in Europe. The Commission’s announcement highlights the importance of innovation and collaboration in achieving the goals of the energy transition.
