Bill on Foreclosures Submitted to Parliament – Committee Meeting Held Behind Closed Doors

The government has submitted bills to Parliament to address the issue of foreclosures, aiming to protect borrowers and prevent the loss of their primary residence. The bills provide for the creation of a new debt verification mechanism, as well as the possibility of debt restructuring through the Financial Commissioner. The powers of the Out-of-Court Dispute Resolution Authority are strengthened, and insolvency practitioners are involved in the process. Borrowers will have more time to utilize available tools, while the decisions of the Financial Commissioner will be binding. The discussion of the bills in the Economic Committee was held behind closed doors, at the request of the members, with AKEL expressing its disagreement. The Minister of Finance informed the committee members about the provisions of the bills, while representatives of the Central Bank also attended the meeting.
