Bill to Include Counseling Psychologists in National Health System Advances

A bill to include counseling psychologists in the General Health System (GHS) is being promoted for a vote in the plenary session of the Parliament. The bill, submitted by MPs from DISY and DIPA, concerns the amendment of GHS legislation so that counseling psychologists are included in the category of “other healthcare professionals.” The Health Insurance Organization (HIO) has expressed its willingness to submit a proposal to its Board of Directors for the inclusion of counseling psychology as a separate professional group. Initially, counseling psychologists will provide services for specific health conditions, through a limited package of services that can be gradually expanded. Counseling psychology can complement clinical psychology, relieving the burden on the healthcare system and improving the distribution of cases. Access to psychological support services should be universal, immediate and quality, as mental health is a fundamental pillar of overall health and well-being.
