Greek State Acquires Photos of Kaisariani Execution

The photographs depicting the moments before the execution of 200 communists by the Nazis in Kaisariani are now in the possession of the Greek state. The Ministry of Culture, with the assistance of the Greek embassy in Belgium, acquired the 262 photographs, 16 documents, and 4 old banknotes that a Belgian collector had put up for sale on eBay. The Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, emphasized that the transfer of the collection was a difficult task requiring authentication, designation as a monument, negotiation to prevent dispersal, and completion of legal procedures. The collection is now considered property of the Greek public, as evidence of the morality and patriotism of those executed. The entire process was completed quickly and efficiently.
