AKEL Criticizes Government's Handling of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Crisis

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, strongly criticized the government and the Minister of Agriculture in particular, regarding the crisis caused by foot-and-mouth disease. He accused the government of incompetence in managing critical issues and called on the President to take responsibility. Mr. Stefanou expressed his disappointment with the President's insistence on keeping the Minister of Agriculture in her position, despite her inability to effectively respond to serious issues such as wildfires, water, and now foot-and-mouth disease. He believes that taking political responsibility is essential. Mr. Stefanou emphasized that the situation with foot-and-mouth disease poses serious risks to livestock farming, the economy, the food industry, and jobs. He called on the government to take responsibility and take specific actions, such as avoiding mass culling of animals, geographically limiting the disease, purchasing animals from abroad, and compensating affected farmers. Furthermore, Mr. Stefanou called on the President to take responsibility, emphasizing that the minister's incompetence cannot be an excuse for further delay in addressing the crisis.
