Cyprus: Housing Loan Dispute for Refugees Heads to Supreme Court

A heated political dispute has erupted in Cyprus regarding the housing scheme for refugees of the Equal Burden Sharing Fund. AKEL proposed giving a second chance to refugees who had not had time to apply within the initial timeframe, a proposal approved by Parliament. The Government and DISY disagree, believing the proposal poses a fiscal risk, and have referred the legislation for review. Parliament rejected the referral, leading the Government to decide to appeal to the Supreme Court to determine the constitutionality of the legislation. The issue concerns whether providing a second chance constitutes a necessary social intervention or creates economic problems.
