AKEL Proposes Measures to Protect Debtors from Foreclosures

Stefanos Stefanou, General Secretary of AKEL, presented a series of proposals to protect debtors and guarantors from foreclosures, a problem that has taken on serious dimensions in Cyprus. AKEL denounces the legislative framework promoted by previous governments and continues to be supported by the current one, which has led to the loss of homes and business premises by thousands of borrowers. AKEL's proposals include protection from foreclosures due to insolvent developers, the right of first refusal to purchase property, the prohibition of the sale of first home and business premises loans, and the guarantee of the right to housing. The proposals do not concern strategic defaulters, but those facing financial difficulties due to job loss or illness.
