Dust in the Atmosphere on Tuesday – Labour Inspection Department Recommendations

The Labour Inspection Department has announced that high concentrations of dust are being observed in the atmosphere across Cyprus on Tuesday. Measurements showed particularly high levels of dust in Paphos (172.9 μg/m3) and Larnaca (163.4 μg/m3), while increased levels were also recorded in Limassol (122.9 μg/m3), Paralimni (128.5 μg/m3) and Nicosia (95.5 μg/m3). Lower concentrations of dust were observed in Zygi (80.5 μg/m3) and Agia Marina Xyliatou (70.9 μg/m3). The Department advises the public, especially vulnerable groups (children, the elderly and people with respiratory problems), to avoid staying in open spaces until the air quality improves. At the same time, it calls on employers to take the necessary protection measures for employees working outdoors, such as the use of appropriate personal protective equipment. The announcement clarifies that “dust” refers to inhalable airborne particles with a diameter of less than 10 μm (PM10). According to the relevant legislation, the average daily dust concentration should not exceed 50 μg/m3.
