Chaos in Tirana: Molotov Cocktails, Tear Gas, and Injuries at Anti-Government Protest

Serious clashes broke out at an anti-government protest in Tirana, when groups of protesters threw Molotov cocktails and fireworks at the building housing the office of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama. The clashes began after the speech of the chairman of the Democratic Party of Albania, Sali Berisha, and continued with protesters moving towards the Parliament. According to Albanian media, at least five police officers were injured with burns and needed hospitalization, while the number of injured protesters is unknown. Police responded with the use of chemicals and water cannons to disperse the crowd. The protest began peacefully after a call from the opposition, demanding the resignation of the government and answers to allegations of corruption and political scandals. Protesters referred to cases allegedly involving Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku. The clashes represent an escalation of political tensions in Albania, with the opposition strongly criticizing the government over issues of corruption and management.
