Spain and Portugal on High Alert for Severe Rainfall

Large areas of Spain and Portugal are on high alert as severe rainfall and strong winds hit the Iberian Peninsula. In Spain, one person is hospitalized in critical condition after being hit by a falling tree in Catalonia. A red alert – the highest level – has been declared in several regions of northern Spain, with forecasts of waves up to 9 meters high. Authorities in Catalonia have canceled classes and sporting events, while restrictions have been imposed on non-essential medical services. At least five people have been injured by the strong winds. More than 40 flights to and from Barcelona's El Prat airport have been canceled. In Portugal, a meteorological phenomenon known as an “atmospheric river” is causing heavy rainfall, mainly in the northern part of the country. About 3,000 residents have been preventatively evacuated from the area around the city of Coimbra. A section of the A1 highway collapsed near Coimbra, disrupting the connection between the northern and southern parts of Portugal.
