Social Support Agency Set to Be Abolished, Powers Transferred to Ministry of Finance

The government is preparing a bill to abolish the Independent Social Support Agency – also known as the 'First Lady's Fund' – and transfer its powers to the Grants and Subsidies Service of the Ministry of Finance. The issue was discussed in the House Institutions Committee. Two proposals were submitted: one by AKEL and DISY, and another by DISY and an independent MP. Both proposals aim to strengthen the Agency’s accountability and transparency and prevent conflicts of interest, with different approaches. The proposals include measures such as limiting private donations to €50,000, appointing a chairman with integrity and political impartiality by the President of the Republic (not the First Lady), and publishing donations over €500. Mr. Stefanos (AKEL) emphasized the need to abolish the Agency due to institutional entanglement and corruption, highlighting that there are already suitable mechanisms for student support (SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION).
