UNFICYP Mandate Renewal Negotiations Reach Final Stage

Negotiations at the United Nations Security Council for the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) are at a final stage. The Security Council has scheduled a meeting on the matter for Thursday. The United Kingdom and France reaffirm their support for a comprehensive and lasting settlement of the Cyprus issue, as well as for the continuation of the United Nations' diplomatic efforts and the implementation of the Measures of Confidence (MoC). Russia and China also support the diplomatic efforts and a solution in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions. The United States and new non-permanent members of the Security Council, such as Latvia and Bahrain, also appear to support the mandate renewal and encourage both sides to continue constructive dialogue. The United Kingdom proposes intensifying the dialogue, including meetings in an expanded format and between the leaders.
