Cyprus's Wildfire Preparedness: A Year After the Disaster, Are Things Any Different?

A year after the devastating wildfire in Limassol, Cyprus is preparing for the wildfire season, but significant shortcomings and delays remain. President Christodoulides had apologized for the inadequate response last year and promised improvements, but the situation remains problematic. Despite assurances of readiness, the procurement of firefighting helicopters has been delayed due to legal challenges and geopolitical developments. The Air Force Firefighting Squadron is expected to have 11 aircraft available, but this number is disputed. Furthermore, the Civil Defense is not fully prepared for population evacuations in the event of a fire. Services have committed to reviewing their plans, but it remains uncertain whether substantial improvements will be made before the start of the wildfire season. There is fear that the situation will repeat itself, with a lack of resources and ineffective response.
