Half of Cyprus's Beaches at Risk from Rising Sea Levels, Warns Malas

Dr. Stavros Malas warned that a one-meter rise in sea levels by the end of the century will endanger half of Cyprus's beaches if immediate action is not taken. The warning was made at the opening of the international conference on natural resource management in Nicosia. Dr. Malas also stated that the Eastern Mediterranean region faces an impending crisis due to climate change, with a predicted temperature increase of 3-5 degrees, prolonged heatwaves, and extreme weather events. The rise in sea levels will have serious consequences for Cyprus's tourism and economy. The international conference, titled “The Water, Energy, Food, Ecosystems (WEFE NEXUS) in the Mediterranean Trajectory, from Source to Sea - From Strategy to Action,” aims to promote integrated solutions for the sustainable management of the region's natural resources. Environmental Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou emphasized that the strategy for natural resource management is fundamental, but implementation is the real challenge. It is essential to develop a reliable regional action framework with realistic goals, indicators, and government cooperation mechanisms.
