Self-Consumption of Electricity Remains Valid in Cyprus

SEAPEK clarifies that the self-consumption of electricity from photovoltaic systems is not being abolished or suspended, despite confusion arising from the misidentification of Grant Schemes with the Self-Consumption Framework. Consumers can continue to install photovoltaics for self-consumption and reduce their energy costs. Grant Schemes are public policy tools funded by the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund and are drawn up annually with objectives such as promoting renewable energy sources and tackling energy poverty. The Self-Consumption Framework concerns the terms of the commercial agreement between consumer and electricity supplier. From January 1, 2026, the method of compensating for surplus energy fed into the grid will change, but net metering will not be abolished. At the same time, the tax reform that came into force introduces tax incentives for energy upgrading of homes, including the installation of photovoltaics. A couple of taxpayers may benefit from tax deductions of up to €10,000 for such expenses, a benefit that is not linked to the Grant Schemes but constitutes a tax right of citizens. SEAPEK calls for informed dialogue on energy issues.
