Outcry Over Cypriot MEP's Offensive Remark About People with Intellectual Disabilities

Published January 26, 2026, 15:16

The Cypriot Paralympic Committee and the disability rights movement strongly condemn the statement made by Cypriot MEP Pheidi Panayiotou, who referred to people with intellectual disabilities as “pellous.” The President of the Committee demands a public apology from the MEP to the athlete who appeared on his show, to all Paralympic athletes and their families, and to society as a whole. The President of the Cyprus Confederation of Organizations of Persons with Disabilities describes the remark as a “rotten perception” reminiscent of dark ages, while the Commissioner for Administration and Protection of Human Rights points out that the statement reveals outdated views on people with disabilities and highlights the need for respect and inclusion.
