Regulation for nicotine pouches - Bill goes to Plenary

The Parliament's Health Committee discussed and approved the bill to regulate nicotine pouches, aiming to protect public health, combat smuggling, and control product quality. The bill is expected to be brought to the Plenary Session of the Parliament in early April. The bill, submitted by MP Chrysi Pantelidi of DIKO, aims to include nicotine pouches in the existing legislative framework for smoking control. Currently, these products are available in Cyprus without a regulatory framework governing their trade, content, and quality. Mr. Pantelidi stated that some of the products available in the free areas come from the occupied territories, which makes it difficult to control their quality and nicotine content. The new legislation will provide for state control mechanisms, taxation and customs labeling, as well as a ban on sales to minors. The bill has the support of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Finance and other stakeholders. According to Mr. Pantelidi, nicotine pouches are mainly used by smokers as a substitute for smoking, and in Scandinavian countries where similar practices have been implemented, a reduction in traditional smoking and improvement in public health have been observed.
