Raouna: Strategic Autonomy is the Next Step in European Integration

The Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, stated that strategic autonomy is the next crucial step in the process of European integration. Speaking at the General Affairs Council in Brussels, Ms. Raouna emphasized the EU's commitment to upholding international legality, territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence – values particularly important for Cyprus due to the ongoing occupation. The Deputy Minister expressed her gratitude to Poland and Denmark for their successful cooperation during the Trio of the Presidency, highlighting the importance of continuity and coherence in European work. The Cypriot Presidency is committed to achieving concrete results, focusing on strengthening the EU's ability to act independently when necessary and to cooperate with its partners whenever possible. Ms. Raouna reiterated that transatlantic relations remain absolutely essential, while emphasizing the need for continued dialogue and diplomacy. The EU, she said, wants to be a reliable and stable partner on the international stage. Strategic autonomy does not mean isolation, but rather strengthening the EU's ability to contribute effectively to global security and prosperity. In summary, the Cypriot Presidency sets as its central goal the promotion of an EU that is both autonomous and open to the world, capable of facing the geopolitical and economic challenges of our time with determination and unity.
