Raouna: “Cyprus Remains Committed to Security, Diplomacy and Stability”

The Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, thanked European partners and institutions for their support to Cyprus in the shadow of the conflicts in Iran. She stressed that Cyprus remains committed to security, diplomacy and stability and that the Cypriot Presidency continues its work normally, despite the difficult conditions. Ms. Raouna stated that Cyprus is the beacon of Europe in the Eastern Mediterranean and assured that the Cypriot Presidency is even more determined to fulfill its institutional obligations. She expressed Cyprus' appreciation for the solidarity it received from the EU, Greece, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. The Deputy Minister emphasized that the situation in the Middle East is not theoretical for Cyprus, due to its geographical position. She referred to the recent incident with an unmanned aircraft at the British Bases, as an indication of the unpredictable nature of the conflict. Ms. Raouna spoke at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, as part of a discussion on the crisis in the Middle East. In addition, she referred to the European Council Summit on March 19, where UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will attend to discuss developments in the Middle East. The European Union reaffirmed its commitment to regional security and stability, calling for restraint and protection of civilians.
