How Waze Quietly Built the Largest Surveillance Network in the World

A cybersecurity researcher from Australia developed a tool to collect and analyze public data from the Waze navigation app, revealing an extensive user surveillance network. Using OSINT techniques, he managed to de-anonymize usernames and link their reports to real-world identities, mapping their movements and daily routines. The data analysis allowed the identification of users' potential home and work locations, as well as their common routes. Waze responded by removing the feature that exposed usernames on public maps, however, the research reveals that the app functions as a global motion logging system. The researcher was able to bypass the app's technical limitations and collect up to 95% of new reports in major cities.
