Yoga Accelerates Opioid Withdrawal Recovery, Study Finds

New research suggests that yoga can accelerate recovery from opioid withdrawal when used as a complementary therapy alongside standard medical treatment. Opioid addiction is a significant public health problem, with high relapse rates often due to disruptions in the nervous system during withdrawal. The study, published in JAMA Psychiatry, found that yoga helps restore balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which is disrupted by opioid dependence. The sympathetic nervous system, responsible for the 'fight or flight' response, becomes overactive during withdrawal, while the parasympathetic system, associated with relaxation and digestion, is suppressed. This imbalance reinforces cravings and increases the risk of relapse. The study showed that yoga can increase heart rate variability (HRV), an indicator of the balance between the two systems, and reduce stress levels and cravings. The research was conducted on 59 men aged 18-50 with mild to moderate opioid withdrawal symptoms, who were divided into two groups: a yoga-as-complementary-therapy group and a standard-care group. The yoga group participated in 10 supervised yoga sessions. The results showed that the yoga group experienced improved recovery, including reduced anxiety, better sleep, and decreased pain. The study highlights the importance of addressing autonomic dysfunction during opioid addiction recovery and suggests that yoga can be a valuable complementary tool to support the process.
