Missed Lifesaving Transplant Opportunity for 38-Year-Old Patient

Published February 11, 2026, 14:32

A 38-year-old patient missed a life-saving transplant opportunity due to delays in air transport to the Onassis Hospital. The issue arose from the inability of air transport companies to meet the tight timeframe required for the organ transfer. The OAY (Organization of State Health Services) stated that as soon as they received the request, they contacted all cooperating companies, but none could ensure timely transport due to the need for preparation and personnel from abroad. The OAY proposed to the Onassis Hospital to reschedule the transplant timeframe, but the proposal was rejected. The case has caused outrage and led to an investigation by the Minister of Health.
