Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Sweep Operation in Geri with Police and Veterinary Services – Cows Found in Illegal Holding

Cyprus is on high alert to protect itself from foot-and-mouth disease, with intensive checks to identify illegal livestock farms. In a recent operation in Geri, Police and Veterinary Services discovered 23 cows in an illegal holding, which was licensed as a pig farm. Illegal cattle breeding in unapproved holdings poses a serious threat to the spread of the disease, as it makes it impossible to trace the animals and increases the risk of virus transmission. Authorities have begun checking the animals to determine their origin. This is the second incident of illegal cattle being discovered, following the discovery of 101 cows in Livadia. Checks will continue with undiminished intensity, as protecting the livestock capital from foot-and-mouth disease is of utmost importance.
