Police Union Protests New Shift Schedule in Cyprus

Police officers in Cyprus are protesting a new decision regarding their working hours, which changes from 12-hour shifts to 11-hour shifts for those working a shift system. This change, affecting over 1,000 officers, is seen as leading to a loss of 15 days of leave annually, while police leadership argues it will increase the number of officers available for policing duties. The Cyprus Police Association (SPA) has already sent a letter to the relevant committee to examine the issue and has scheduled a meeting with the Minister of Justice. Legal action to overturn the decision is also being considered, and the SPA is seeking an alliance with the 'Equality' trade union for joint protests during the Cypriot Presidency of the European Union. 'Equality' has already proposed a common protest front to the SPA.
