Stefano's Fire: Accusations of Incompetence and Government Delays Regarding Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Stefanos Stefanou, General Secretary of AKEL, launched a strong criticism of the government for its handling of the foot-and-mouth disease crisis, accusing it of incompetence and delays. He called on the President of the Republic to take responsibility and take immediate action to address the situation. Mr. Stefanou also criticized the Minister of Agriculture, hinting at her inability to meet the demands of the crisis, recalling similar problems that had emerged in the past with the fires and the water issue. He expressed his concern about the President's insistence on keeping the Minister in office. The General Secretary of AKEL emphasized the serious risks that the crisis poses to livestock farming, the economy and the food chain, as well as to jobs. He proposed specific actions, such as avoiding mass culling of animals, requesting an exemption from the relevant EU protocol and taking measures to geographically limit the disease. In addition, he called for the purchase of animals from abroad to restore livestock capital, the compensation of affected livestock farmers at real market prices and the granting of facilities to affected producers. Concluding, he called on the President to take responsibility, emphasizing that the Minister's incompetence cannot be an excuse for further delays.
