The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, stated in Brussels, upon his arrival at the informal European Council, that the escalation in US-EU relations is detrimental to all. He emphasized the importance of maintaining good transatlantic relations and expressed confidence that the situation can be de-escalated. President Christodoulides mentioned that the Republic of Cyprus fully respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark, underlining that Cyprus knows better than any other EU member state what it means to violate these principles. He expressed his expectation to be briefed on the latest developments in the understanding reached at Davos. He emphasized the goal of the Cypriot Presidency for greater EU autonomy in areas such as defense, security, and energy, arguing that the current situation confirms the correctness of this approach. He noted that Cyprus seeks to strengthen the EU's competitiveness. Responding to a question about security guarantees for Ukraine, the President said that the issue would be discussed at the Council. Regarding EU-US relations, he dismissed the view that they have been irreparably damaged, reiterating the priority of de-escalation and maintaining transatlantic cooperation.
