President: We Have a Clear Plan for the British Bases

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that Cyprus has a “clear plan” for how it will proceed on all issues relating to the British Bases in Cyprus. He informed the British Government and the National Council about this plan, which will be implemented step by step. The President emphasized that Turkish Cypriots can have a say in the negotiations on the issue of the British Bases if they return to the Republic of Cyprus, while Turkey can have a say in the future of the Bases if it first recognizes the Republic of Cyprus. He recalled that negotiations have taken place in the past on the non-military development of areas within the British Bases, with positive results. President Christodoulides noted that Cyprus has a duty to ensure the safety of Cypriot citizens living within the British Bases, who are not second-class citizens. The Government has also developed other scenarios for the issue of the Bases, depending on the evolution of the situation. The Government has conveyed its positions to the British Government and expects a response. The priority at the moment is crisis management, but Cyprus is ready to proceed with its plan for the British Bases.
