First Support Package for Livestock Farmers – Statements by the Minister of Agriculture

The Council of Ministers of Cyprus approved a first support package for livestock farmers affected by foot-and-mouth disease. The package includes an advance payment for loss of income, which can reach up to 50,000 euros per livestock unit, depending on the number of animals. The government emphasizes that this is an immediate and substantial intervention to support the primary sector at a critical time. In addition, a special committee has been established with representatives from various bodies, such as the Veterinary Services, the Department of Agriculture, the Agricultural Research Institute, as well as representatives of livestock farmers and agricultural organizations. The committee will work to determine individualized compensation packages, tailored to the needs of each livestock farmer for their full reactivation. The government is also considering the possibility of importing animals from countries that are free from the disease, after the disinfection and complete clearance of the affected areas in Cyprus. The goal is the immediate payment of the advance and the fair compensation of livestock farmers, so that they can return to production as soon as possible. The Minister of Agriculture assured that no livestock farmer will be left alone and that the state will stand by them with determination and respect, ensuring that they are not exposed to their financial obligations. This measure is proof of the government's commitment to supporting the primary sector and the people who work in it.
