First Overflow of a Dam in Paphos This Year: Pomos Dam

The Pomos dam in Paphos has recorded the first overflow of the current water year, due to the heavy rainfall of recent days. Although the overall situation of dams in Cyprus remains disheartening, the small size of the Pomos dam (capacity of 860,000 cubic meters) and restrictions on irrigation contributed to its rapid filling and overflow. The Pomos dam is used for irrigating crops in the area. In contrast to Pomos, the remaining dams in the Chrysochous province show lower fullness levels. Evretou, the third largest dam in Cyprus, is at 19% of its capacity, while the Argaka and Agia Marina Chrysochous dams are at 33% and 59% respectively. The Pomos dam was virtually empty last October, with only 80,000 cubic meters of water in its basin. The rapid increase in water levels is due to recent rainfall and limited demand due to measures to address the water crisis. The overflow of the Pomos dam is a positive sign, but does not significantly change the overall picture of the hydrological situation in Cyprus. The need for prudent management of water resources remains imperative.
