Immediate Democracy Responds to Candidate's Past Conviction

MEP Pheidi Panayiotou and candidate MP Valeri Tarapai commented on the case of the Immediate Democracy candidate who had been convicted in the occupied territories for drug trafficking. Mr. Panayiotou stated that the party was unaware of the incident before the internal elections and that the candidate could have continued to run, as the conviction did not appear in her criminal record. He stressed that Immediate Democracy believes in second chances and that Valeri has changed her life. Ms. Tarapai, who withdrew her candidacy, stated that her decision was personal and that she did not receive pressure from the party. She expressed concern about how the publicity of her case affected her image. Mr. Panayiotou criticized the president of DIKO, Nikola Papadopoulos, for contributing to the continuation of stereotypes about former offenders.
