TEPAK Rector Expresses Surprise Over Exclusion from Limassol Planning Initiative

The Rector of TEPAK, Panagiotis Zafiris, expressed his surprise and disappointment at the university's exclusion from the Limassol planning initiative, undertaken by the municipalities of Limassol, Amathous and Polemidia in collaboration with the University of Cyprus and Frederick University. Mr. Zafiris emphasized that TEPAK was neither informed nor invited to contribute substantially to the initiative, despite being the largest organization operating in the historical center of Limassol with significant academic presence and expertise in areas related to sustainable urban development. He expressed his frustration, highlighting that the project's outcomes may not necessarily have TEPAK's approval. The three Mayors responded that TEPAK was informed about the press conference and invited, acknowledging the university's role in the city's development. However, they imply that TEPAK's non-participation in the planning may be due to legal obstacles imposed by the European Union, as a previous agreement to facilitate the passage of pets was cancelled by the authorities in the south citing EU law. Mr. Zafiris confirmed that TEPAK will continue to work on sustainable urban development in Limassol through its own initiatives, despite the difficulties. He expressed hope that the Technical Committees will operate with transparency and efficiency, with the participation of competent individuals from both sides. Overall, the dispute concerns the lack of inclusion of TEPAK in a significant urban planning initiative for Limassol, with mutual accusations of lack of information and legal obstacles. The case highlights the challenges of cooperation between the two communities in Cyprus, even on matters of common interest.
