President: Government’s Goal is Pension Increases for Low-Income Retirees

President Nikos Christodoulides has set a substantial increase in pensions, with an emphasis on low-income retirees, as a key goal of his government, while highlighting pension reform as one of the central policy priorities for 2026. He stated this during a meeting with delegations from the trade unions SEK, PEO, and DEOK. The President stressed the importance of social dialogue and described the trade unions as “partners and fellow travelers” of the government, recognizing the longstanding contribution of workers to the development of the Cypriot economy. He stated that the government is ready to discuss the issues raised by the trade unions with all relevant officials. Pension reform was highlighted as one of the most important issues for 2026, with the aim of completing all necessary procedures, including parliamentary ones, by 2026. President Christodoulides reminded that this is a significant reform, as for the first time since 1980 the state is intervening so substantially in the pension system with the sole purpose of increasing pensions, especially for low-income retirees, in order to strengthen social cohesion and economic security.
