CYSOA President Condemns MEP's Derogatory Remark About People with Intellectual Disabilities

The President of the Cyprus Confederation of Organizations of People with Disabilities (CYSOA), Themis Anthopoulou, strongly condemned the view expressed by MEP Fidias Panagiotou that people with intellectual disabilities are “worthless”, describing it as a “rotten perception” that evokes dark times of discrimination. Ms. Anthopoulou emphasized that it is unthinkable for a Member of the European Parliament to use racist language and expressed surprise at how such a person can represent Cyprus in the European Parliament and negotiate for the rights of people with disabilities. CYSOA does not accept the argument that it is a mistake or ignorance, as it believes that an adult politician should be aware of such issues. Ms. Anthopoulou stressed that this view is a distortion of reality and undermines the struggles for the acceptance, equal participation and inclusion of people with disabilities in society.
