President of Veterinary Association: "We Also Disagree with Animal Culling"

The President of the Pan-Cypriot Veterinary Association, Dimitris Epameinondas, expressed the Association's disagreement with the culling of animals due to foot-and-mouth disease, emphasizing that it is a legal obligation imposed by European legislation. He stated that no one would want to be in their position, as they are called to do something they do not want to do. Mr. Epameinondas stressed that European legislation is the strictest in the world and provides for the fatal outcome of all animals in a herd in the event of a confirmed case. At the same time, he expressed the view that there should be a possibility of deviation depending on the conditions of each country. He acknowledged the reaction of livestock farmers as fully understandable, as they are losing their animals and livestock farming is being destroyed. He stressed that the situation is causing economic disaster and there is a risk of food shortages. Positively, he noted that cases appear to be limited to the Larnaca area.
