Isolated Medieval Community Uncovered in Spain: Centuries of Life Underground Revealed

Archaeologists in Spain have uncovered the remains of a medieval community that lived in isolation in caves for five centuries. The community, located at Las Gobas, faced significant challenges, including diseases, inbreeding, and violent conflicts between its members. Genetic analyses revealed high rates of inbreeding (63%), indicating marriages between close relatives for many generations. Furthermore, the bones bore trauma suggesting violence, and traces of smallpox were detected, likely through contaminated pork. The community's isolation was so profound that there was no significant intermingling with other populations, even after the Islamic conquest. This discovery offers a unique insight into the life and hardships of an isolated society during the Middle Ages.
