Pioneering Program for Mosaic Restoration with the University of Frederick's Participation

The University of Frederick is participating in a pioneering program titled “Mapping, Highlighting and Copying of Mosaics from Ecclesiastical and other Spaces of High Cultural Value” (MOSAIC), which is the first of its kind in Cyprus. The program is implemented in collaboration with the Technical University of Crete, the Byzantine Museum of the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation, and the Department of Antiquities of the Deputy Ministry of Culture. The project aims to digitally map and reproduce faithful copies of Byzantine mosaics, utilizing modern technology and artificial intelligence. A production process will be designed and optimized for the creation of molds and the production of copies in various scales. The methodology will accurately record the shape, texture, and color shades of the mosaics, contributing to the preservation and documentation of cultural heritage. The copies will be used for educational and exhibition purposes, offering a modern approach to the study of Byzantine art. The University of Frederick will contribute with existing and new state-of-the-art equipment. Professor Antonios Lontos explains that the process will capture even cracks and color alterations, ensuring an accurate record of the mosaics in case of damage to the original works. The expertise gained will also be utilized in other cases abroad.
