Efforts to Legislate Compensation for Loss of Property Use in Occupied Territories

The Parliamentary Committee on Refugees is working to pass legislation regulating compensation for property owners in the occupied territories due to loss of use. The discussion focuses on how the compensation will be made, through the Central Fund for Equal Burden Sharing or the Fund for Loss of Property Use, with the Ministry of Finance favoring the former. The available amount for compensation is estimated at 20-25 million euros, which will come from the 0.4% fee on property transactions, resulting in very low compensation for many owners (about 2 euros per month). The Committee is also discussing the timing of the start of the loss of use (from 1974 or from the enactment of the legislation).
