Parliament Approves Cyta's Expansion into Energy Sector

The Parliament approved legislation allowing Cyta to operate in the energy sector, in addition to telecommunications. The bill was approved with 29 votes in favor, 2 against, and 14 abstentions. Cyta's involvement in conventional energy production was excluded after an amendment by DISY. During the discussion, there were disagreements regarding competition with the private sector and the need for transparency. MP Andreas Themistocleous opposed the bill, warning of market distortion, while MP Kostis Eustathiou argued that Cyta's entry would enhance competition in the electricity market. MP Irene Charalambidou expressed opposition, speaking of “energy alchemy” and the government’s failure to address market problems. MP Alekos Tryfonidis supported that the regulation would allow Cyta to offer combined service packages, while Ilias Myrianthous emphasized that Cyta’s entry could lead to lower prices for citizens. Overall, the approval of the legislation marks a new phase for Cyta, aiming to expand its activities and enhance competition in the energy market.
