Pan Cypriot Organization of the Blind Condemns Abolition of Blind Allowance

The Pan Cypriot Organization of the Blind (POB) condemns the abolition of the monthly allowance of €382 for the blind, which has been provided since 1996. The POB reports that the examination of new applications has stopped since September, leaving newly blinded individuals without support and jeopardizing the financial survival of the 2050 blind people in Cyprus. The organization argues that the abolition of the allowance is being done to save €8 million, which will be allocated to other subsidies, even to people without severe disabilities. Furthermore, it denounces the fact that the blind are also deprived of the special domestic electricity tariff they were entitled to under European regulations. The POB believes that the abolition of the allowance constitutes a policy of exclusion and destitution, returning to the situation that prevailed before 1990. It concludes by calling on Parliament to reject the relevant bill and plans a protest rally outside the Presidential Palace.
