Siege of Hunger and Thirst: Kobani Without Water, Electricity, and Medicine

The Kurdish city of Kobani in northern Syria is facing a critical humanitarian situation as it has been placed under a full siege by Syrian regime forces. Residents, numbering tens of thousands of civilians, are deprived of water, electricity, fuel, and basic food supplies, while the winter exacerbates conditions. The city has been cut off from the outside world with the closure of road arteries to Hasaka and Qamishli, hindering any supply efforts. Simultaneously, the provision of vital services, such as water and electricity, has been disrupted, leaving the population isolated and at the mercy of the cold. Residents are forced to wait in lines for a few liters of water, while hospitals operate with minimal fuel reserves for generators, endangering the lives of patients dependent on medical equipment. The lack of electricity has paralyzed economic activity, with closed businesses and schools. The situation is described as “hunger and thirst” by Kurdish and Arab sources, while the cutting of internet and telecommunications makes it difficult to record and transmit the true scale of the crisis. The city is experiencing a slow and exhausting siege, where the lives of residents are drained daily due to the deprivation of basic goods.
