POVEK: Owners of Turkish Cypriot Commercial Properties Alarmed by Rent Increases

Owners of Turkish Cypriot commercial properties are uniting and seeking meetings with relevant authorities in response to significant rent increases resulting from amendments to legislation concerning Turkish Cypriot properties. POVEK, through the newly formed struggle committee of displaced administrators, is requesting meetings with the President of the Republic, the Minister of Interior, the Parliamentary Committee on Refugees, and the Pan-Cypriot Federation of Refugees. The amendment to the law “On Turkish Cypriot Properties (Management and Other Issues) (Temporary Provisions) Law of 1991” has caused “tremendous disruption,” as owners are now required to pay market rent for properties they use for their businesses, properties they lost the use of due to displacement. The struggle committee is prepared to submit a detailed memorandum explaining their disagreements regarding the amended law. POVEK’s Central Organizer, Kyriakos Mustakas, stated that if their request for a meeting is not met, they will be forced to take mobilization measures.
